Alternative Miss Ireland
Drag beauty pageant set to take place on March 14 in the Olympia Theatre
Now very much a Dublin institution, this long-running celebration of all the city's gay community is a beauty pageant held to elect the year's Alternative Queen of Ireland. Gender roles are fluid: Judged on poise, personality and originality, the Aspiring Queen Cailíní are subjected to trial by daywear, eveningwear and a chaotic swimwear round, presided over as always by the inimitable Panti. There's usually plenty of entertainment, and the odd bit of drama: popular drag queen Veda's hissy fit on losing the crown in 1998 is still the stuff of legend. Proceeds go to Irish HIV/AIDS causes, and tickets are available from €34.50.
